Windkat Chimney Cowl Installation

Steps to getting your Windkat installed

The Windkat can be a DIY installation. Installation is simple, with the main consideration being access to your chimney to measure and install. If you don't fancy climbing up to your chimney, most chimney sweeps, builders, roofers or your local 'handy-person' will easily manage it.

Before purchasing your Windkat you will need to know the internal diameter (ideally in mm) of your chimney flue at the top where the Windkat will be installed. An accurate measurement is important as the Windkat must match your internal flue diameter as closely as possible to be fully effective and to fit. If you have a rigid metal flue pipe or flexible flue liner (as apposed to a basic brick chimney for instance) you may be able to find the internal diameter on any documentation you received from the flue supplier without having to measure at the top. Some houses with chimney stacks don't have round flues. In that case measure the flue at its widest point.

Once you know the diameter of your flue you can find and purchase the right size and configuration of Windkat by using the  Product Finder/sorter at the top of our  Products page where you first 'choose your chimney type' followed by the diameter 'size of your flue', referring to 'Help with Choosing your Windkat' and FAQs if required.

Once installed your Windkat will start working immediately and should you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact us.

Windkat Installation Instructions

Thank you for choosing the Windkat. Please read the information below carefully and email us on enquiries@windkatcowls.co.uk should you have any queries.

·      Please take safety precautions when climbing up to the chimney

·      Wear protective gloves when handling the Windkat as the edges are sharp

·      Only install the Windkat if your chimney is intact

·      Do not install if there is a risk of lightning.

·      Please make sure your flue is safe and meets building regulations before installing the Windkat. Getting a qualified Chimney Sweep to sweep and check your chimney is a good way to do this.

A) Windkat with Plug-in for flue pipes

(also for chimney pots where suitable)

Included in delivery:Windkat, plug-in connector, heat resistant sealant

Tools required: gloves

                  1.            Slot the plug-in connector into the flue, making sure to seal the gap between the flue pipe and the connector with the heat resistant sealant provided. The connector can be up to 6mm smaller than the flue in diameter, but must be secured with sealant.

                  2.            IMPORTANT: The Winkdat must fit firmly onto the plugin connector. If it slides on easily, remove it again and carefully press-in all the injection nozzles by approximately 5mm then push the Windkat all the way onto the plugin connector again (this time it should make a firm fit and the nozzles will self adjust).

B) Windkat with Baseplate for chimney stacks

Included in delivery:Windkat, base plate, 4 x 6mm wall plugs, 4 screws, heat resistant sealant

Tools required:Hammer drill, 6mm masonry drill bit, screwdriver, gloves and pencil.

                  1.            Remove the Windkat from the base plate.

                  2.            Place the base plate on the chimney and position it according to the chimney’s dimensions.

                  3.            Mark mounting holes on the chimney.

                  4.            Remove the base plate from the chimney and drill the 6mm mounting holes.

                  5.            Insert the wall plugs into the mounting holes

                  6.            Use heat resistant sealant to seal the space between base plate and chimney stack.

                  7.            Secure the base plate with screws into the drilled mounting holes.

                  8.            Place the Windkat back onto the base plate. The Windkat will fasten automatically due to the nozzles. No extra fasteners are required. IMPORTANT: The Windkat must fit firmly onto the baseplate. If it slides on easily, remove it again and carefully press-in all the injection nozzles by approximately 5mm then push the Windkat all the way onto the baseplate again (this time it should make a firm fit and the nozzles will self adjust).

C) Windkat with baseplate and flexible liner attachment

(this configuration is not for DIY installation)

Included in delivery:Windkat, base plate with flexible liner attachment, fixing band, 4 x 6mm wall plugs, 4 screws, heat resistant sealant

Tools required:Hammer drill, 6mm masonry drill bit, screwdrivers, gloves and pencil.

                  1.            Remove the Windkat from the base plate.

                  2.            Place the base plate on the chimney and position it according to the chimney’s dimensions.

                  3.            Mark mounting holes on the chimney.

                  4.            Remove the base plate from the chimney and drill the 6mm mounting holes.

                  5.            Insert the wall plugs into the mounting holes

                  6.            Push the metal fixing band with jubilee clip over the flexible liner, loosening if necessary.

                  7.            Slot the baseplate pipe with the ridge inside the flexible liner, it should fit snugly over the ridge. Fasten the jubilee clip carefully so that it squeezes the flexible liner above the ridge so that it cannot slide down. This is a fiddly job unfortunately!

                  8.            Use heat resistant sealant to seal the space between base plate and chimney stack.

                  9.            Secure the base plate with screws into the drilled mounting holes.
